03 agosto EldestEldest is the second book in the Inheritance trilogy. The first book in the trilogy being Eragon.
The author of this series is Christopher Paolini, and he began writing the first book of the series at age fifteen at the completion of his high school education. Now, that either says he is a genius, or that the education system in his home state sucks.
This book is much stronger than its precursor. Paolini got away from his habit in the first book of making homages every few pages, which is good because that means that all of the material in the book is fresh.
This book is mostly about the training that Eragon undergoes, and also embodies his struggle with adversity among the elves and his struggle with a wound that he sustained fighting a Shade in the first novel.
Unfortunately, many events in this book are extremely predictable. there is a lot of betrayal and turncloaking that is obvious from the beginning of the book in a place where it seems that the author is just getting rid of characters he no longer wants. Some aspects of the book are sloppy, but it is passable.
Also rather unfortunate is the cover of the book, which COMPLETELY gives away the end of the book which he still writes as if he intends it to be shocking.
This book was better written that the first, but not good enough to get a perfect score. I give this book 4.5/5
![]() EragonToday (and by today, I mean July 12) I finished the book Eragon by Christopher Paolini. I've read a few books since my last entry, but they've been collections of short stories, and I also read about eight magazines (history) and neither of those are suitable for this type of review.
It has been a while since I started this post, since July 12 was over two weeks ago now, as I went camping for a week, and once i returned this site was "unavailable" to me.
Well, now that it is August 3rd, I may as well finish this entry.
This book (Eragon) gets four our of five stars. While the story was solid, it was evident to me that the author was still trying to find his style, and thus made too many homages to the authors that he idolizes.
The book has strong character develpment, and unlike many novels, it does not shy away from allowing the main characters to experience tragedy, or indeed death.
I think that this book is excellent. There is a strong story, and there is also enough twists in it to make events somewhat unpredictable. While there are far too many homages to authors like Tolkien, the book still comes off as an original work.
I reccomend this book strongly, especially to younger fantasy readers and those who are just beginning to read fantasy.
02 julio Dragonlance LegendsAs stated in my previous post, this review is on a trilogy. The
Trilogy is called the Dragonlance Legends Trilogy, and the books that
it encompasses are Time of the Twins, War of the Twins, andTest of the Twins.
Given how crappy I think I did on my last review I'm going to try
to streamline the process and not give a synopsis of the book, which
really spoils the reading of it. And I really don't want to do that, as
I hate when books are spoiled for me, and thus I don't want to do that
for others. If anyone actually reads these that is.
So from now on I will try to only write about the attributes of the book without giving the plot away.
So. The books are about love and the triumph of goodness. they are
a fanstasy series about two brothers, one a mage and one a warrior.
they are divided, and one is determined to either help or stop the
other. he cannot decide which he will do, because he desperately loves
his twin.
There is strong character development in the books, all the
character strike a chord inside the reader. This trilogy expands on
what happened in the last trilogy of these character, which was the Dragonlance Chronicles.
Raistlin and Caramon Majere must go through many trials of their
affection for each other, which is often seemingly one sided. the books
tear at the heart and make the reader aware of the world in which the
books take place, the fantasy world of Krynn. The books follow their travels back in time, and Raistlin's attempt to become a god. I give this series four and a half stars out of five, and I heartily reccomend reading these books. Here they are at Chapters.Indigo.ca Though since I suspect no one reads this, it hardly matters. 26 junio The Next ReviewThe next review is going to be on a trilogy that I am reading now. I decided to do the trilogy rather than the books seperately because it is one long story, so I thought it would be inappropriate to fo them seperately. the trilogy is called the Dragonlance Legends Trilogy, and it follows Raistlin and his brother Caramon through 300 years of the past.
and thats all i'm saying other than that the books are by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman. 21 junio Perdido Street StationThis is the first book I'm rating for this site, and I give it a perfect five stars out of five.
Spoilers Apply
Perdido Street Station is an excellent novel filled with interesting developments and plot twists. a brief synopsis of the book would be that a creature that had its wings removed for a crime among its people wants to regain its flight. He goes across the continent and finds a scientist who is on the fringe of the law, but who is quite brilliant. The Scientist starts studying flight, and gathers hundreds of specimens in order to study wing structure and larval rebirth. He finds a multi-coloured caterpillar that fascinates him and he does everything he can to make it survive. This creature emerges from its cocoon as a terrifying soul-eating creature that eats the soul of the scientist's co-worker as soon as it hatches. It escapes out the window and finds four others of its kind and frees them from their captivity. The monsters then begin to roost and eat as they choose in the city. through various means they are all killed and order is restored.
It is an excellent book. I glossed over it because I do not want to ruin the book completely for those of you who want to read it.
I reccomend it whole heartedly. It is a little bit strange, and the author, China Mieville, manages to make all of his readers uncomfortable in the first thirty pages because the main character is fucking a bug-woman (a woman with a beetle head), but it is an excellent book that I would reccomend.
The character and plot development is excellent.
Comments are welcome, 19 junio A Rating SystemI was thinking earlier that in order to review books, I should have some sort of rating system. I don't really want to use something so corny as stars or thumbs up, I want to use something that is not totally cliched. So. What is there?
I sure as heck can't think of anything right now, so we're using stars.
I will rate out of five, and I can use quarter and half stars if I so choose.
Yeah.
I'm Done.
The first review should be up tomorrow. 17 junio A New BeginningHello everyone. This is my second MSN Space, and it focuses on books and book reviews and the like. I might occassionally put in a CD review as I also love listening to music and playing music, but the focus will be on books.
My other MSN Space is still active, it is called the Dungeon, and its primary focus is on politics and political commentary.
Once I have a few books reviewed on this site I will start dividing it into categories, though for the first few weeks I will not be doing that. The first book that I will be talking about is the book Perdido Street Station which was written by China Mieville, and that review will be posted as soon as I finish reading the book, which will be in a day or so.
I will include here that other contributors are welcome to post on this page. If you leave me your e-mail address in a comment (there is an option that only I will see if you leave it) and tell me that you want to contribute, I will get back to you as soon a possible. I hope that everyone will enjoy reading this page, and I will try to read a variety of books so that people will not get bored.
If you have any reccomenations for books I will be happy to entertain them as possibilities.
If people are interested in reading my other blog I have put a link to it at the bottom left of the page.
Have a nice day, and please bookmark me (no pun intended) and come back often. I enjoy receiving feedback on what I write about so I encourage comments.
